Sappho
(lived in the mid-7th century B.C.), a Greek lyric poet, born in Lesbos.
She, like many of her countrymen, left Lesbos because of political troubles
and settled in Sicily, where she died. We now have 12 poems by her. Her
principal subject is love, which she expresses with great simplicity and
a remarkable felicity of phrase.
Phaon was one of Sappho’s lovers.
