Roerich was born on October 9, 1874, in St. Petersburg, then the capital of the Russian Empire, into the family of a notary. His father, Konstantin (Constantine) Fedorovich Roerich, came from Swedish nobility that had settled in Russia some time in the mid-1700s. His mother, Maria Vasilievna, was descended from the prosperous Kalashnikov merchant clan.
