Ancient Greek and Roman Myths Notes

Medea

Medea, daughter of the King of Colkhida, she betrayed her father and helped Jason and his companions (Argonauts) to get Golden Fleece. After that she fled with Jason. They had two children. Back in Greece Jason fell in love with another princess and was going to marry her. To take revenge Medea killed her children by Jason and burnt his new fiancée. The image of Medea is very popular in fiction and fine arts. Different authors depict her differently: some as an evil witch, others as a betrayed unhappy woman.
See: Eugène Delacroix Medea about to Kill Her Children.
Alphonse Mucha. Medée.
