Hans Memling. Portrait of a Praying Man.

Portrait of a Praying Man is the left part of a triptych, the central part of which bore Madonna with Child, and on the right part there was a portrait of the Man’s wife. Both the central and the right parts are lost. When closed, the wings of the triptych  had a still life on them. The still life of the left part has a jug with flowers: white lilies symbolize the purity of the Virgin, and the purple irises symbolize Maria in Sorrow (Mater dolorosa)
