Christ and Woman Taken in Adultery. This episode is described
by St. John (8:2-11). The Pharisees brought to Christ a woman caught in
adultery; under the Jewish law she should have been stoned, but Romans
forbade the Jews to enforce the death penalty. Pharisees waited what Christ
would say in hope that he would offend either Jews or Romans. Christ said
nothing but wrote in the dust, 'That one of you who is faultless shall
throw the first stone'. At this the woman's accusers left, and Christ said
to the woman, 'You may go; do not sin again'.
