Agnolo Bronzino. Portrait of Laura Battiferri.

Laura Battiferri

Laura was born in 1523 in the Italian city of Urbino as the illegitimate daughter of a local noble, John Anthony, who legitimized her upon birth and made sure she was given an education and upbringing befitting a woman of noble status.

Her first marriage happened at an early age, but she was very shortly thereafter widowed. She married her second husband, Bartolommeo Ammanati, a Florentine sculptor, in 1550, but the marriage remained childless.

During her life she was considered a talented poet, her works drawing many admirers and even being published and printed in Italy and Spain. Her popularity made her a subject of many contemporary artists and writers.

Laura Battiferi died in 1589.
