This is the third of four paintings done for the duc de Penthièvre. It is considered by some to be the most lighthearted and charming of the series. This scene from Torquato Tasso's Aminta depicts Sylvia running away from the wolf she has just wounded. This was one of the two paintings in the series which the duc later moved to the Château de Chanteloup in 1786. They were later seized by revolutionary authorities in 1794 and ended up in the Museum of Tours
