Briusov, Valery Yakovlevich (1873-24), Russian poet, one of the founders and theoreticians of symbolism in Russian literature. His best known collections of verses are Tertia Vigilia (1900), Urbi et Orbi (1903); Wreath (1906). He is the author of two historical novels Fire Angel (1908), Altar of Victory (1913), critical essays, translations from Ancient Roman, Italian, French, and Armenian literature
