was an admirer of Impressionists and a hobby painter himself. On Theo’s request he agreed to look after the sick Vincent in Auvers-sur-Oise. The doctor and the patient became friends. Gachet liked his portrait by van Gogh so much that he asked the artist to paint a second version of the portrait. Art was a strong bond in their friendship and van Gogh was overjoyed to be able to paint someone who really understood his work. After a long period of loneliness he finally found a person with whom he could discuss his paintings
