Mendeleev, Dmitry Ivanovich
(1834-1907) Russian chemist, born in Tobolsk. Professor of chemistry at St. Petersburg from 1866; he discovered and formulated the basic law of chemistry - the periodic law; by which he predicted the existence of several elements which were subsequently discovered.
