Cosimo de’ Medici ( 1389 - 1464) was a prominent ancestor of the Medici family, under whose reign the dynasty reached its peak as both an economic and a political power. He sponsored the Platonic Academy in Florence and was a great admirer, patron and promoter of Donatello, Brunelleschi, Fra Angelico and numerous other painters and sculptors, which established the Medici’s reputation as patrons of Renaissance art in Florence
