Guido Riccio da Fogliano.
c. 1328. Fresco. Palazzo Pubblico, Sala del Mappamondo, Siena, Italy. More. [Order a Print]
The fresco was painted in honor of the military commander Guido Riccio da Fogliano
and shows a topographical view of the besieged town of Montemassi on the left and the Sienese fortress on the right. The siege took place in 1328, following the end of Ludwig of Bavaria’s Italian campaign, when the papal party – which included Siena – sought to turn the Emperor’s imminent defeat to their advantage
