Count Semyon Romanovich Vorontsov (1744-1832) - Russian statesman and diplomat. Vorontsov had been loyal to Peter III, and after the latter’s overthrow and suspicious death in 1762, was pressured to join the diplomatic service. Starting out as a low-level diplomat in Vienna in 1764, he rose through the ranks to become ambassador to Venice and, later, to London, in which capacity he served for nearly 21 years between 1785 and 1806, when he chose to retire for reasons of ill health. Vorontsov continued to reside in London until his death in 1832.
