Leberecht, Karl (1755-1827) was an engraver and medalist employed by the St. Petersburg Mint. Between 1783 and 1785, he studied in Rome with funding from the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. He was elected a full member of the Academy in 1794. This portrait by Kauffman was probably painted during the sitter's stay in Rome.
