Philibert Rivière was the Councilor of the State. Madame Rivière was his wife. Mademoiselle Caroline Rivière, their daughter, died at the age of fifteen, the year this portrait was painted. Exhibited at the Salon of 1806, the three portraits of the Rivières did not attract much attention
