(1775-1825), Spanish patriot and guerrilla; when Madrid was liberated in 1812, El Empecinado was celebrated as a symbol of the heroic Spanish resistance to the French invaders alongside the Duke of Wellington. His liberal ideas brought about his shameful death in 1825 at the time of the counter-revolutionary terror. He was hanged
