Charles Legrand, son of a French general, was killed on 2 May 1808 in Madrid, when rebelling peasants attacked a regiment of Napoleon's cuirassiers on the Puerta del Sol, tore the men from their horses, and massacred them. (See: Goya’s The Second of May 1808 at the Puerta del Sol). In his memory, his parents commissioned Gros to execute this life-size portrait.
