Désirée Clary (1770-1860), future queen of Sweden, was the sister of Julie-Marie Clary, wife of Joseph Bonaparte. She married the Napoleonic marshal Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte (1763-1844) in 1799, who was elected the crown prince of Sweden and heir to the elderly childless Karl XIII in 1810. Upon the death of the latter, in 1818, he was proclaimed the king of Sweden and Norway under the name of Karl XIV Johan.
