Mrs Benjamin Pickman, self-assured and plump-faced, was 19 and had been married a year when Copley painted her. The Pickmans were Tories who went to England when the Revolution broke out. After the war, they returned to Massachusetts where, despite their earlier loyalties, Pickman became treasurer of the town of Salem
