Rio dei Mendicanti: Looking South. This is one of a set of 4 paintings by Canaletto, usually regarded as his earliest surviving view paintings of Venice. Probably they were executed for a Venetian patron, but were first recorded in the collection of the Princes of Liechtenstein in 1806. The work is of high accomplishment and it is hard to believe that other, now lost, studies by the artist, did not precede it.
