Madame Bergeret. The true identity of the woman in this painting is not confirmed, but she is speculated to be Marguerite Richard, sister of Abbé de Saint-Non and wife of Jacques-Onésyme Bergeret, a rich financier and one of the more prominent of Boucher’s patrons. More recent research has suggested that the woman in the portrait may, in fact, be Bergeret’s second or even third wife.
